More Than Walking: Empowering Spinal Cord Injured Persons in India

FROM THE 2011 SPECIAL PREVIEW ISSUE: CELEBRATION OF WILLIAM CAREY'S 250th BIRTHDAY

By Managing Editor

From what can be read about William Carey’s life in India, it can be easily ascertained that he significantly impacted the society there. The results of his time in India directly impacted the lives of the people with which he came into contact. This same effect can be seen in the work of documentary filmmaker Jonathan Sigworth.

In “More than Walking” Sigworth gives us a poignant look at the lives of quadrapalegic persons overcoming the daily demands that being a “quad” in India place on them. In 2006 Sigworth became a quadriplegic after falling from a 70 ft. cliff in Northwest India. Three years after his fall Sigworth produced a short film to tell his story and the stories of four of his quadriplegic friends. As Sigworth states in the video commentary, the film was originally shot for other “quads” to give them hope, and to challenge them.

Sigworth’s film challenges those working in other fields of development as well. In it we are given a great example of using film bring shalom and to empower others. “More than Walking” uses both the media and the knowledge of physical therapy techniques to inspire and to empower others in cross-cultural settings. Sigworth’s efforts, like Carey’s, are continuing to contribute to development for the people of India.
